Gisborne: the first match
The fist match was to be played in Gisborne of all places, though it had been wisely chosen as due to its isolation from the major cities in New Zealand, this meant that there was hope that there would not be so many protesters marching down the streets demanding the game be cancelled. Even so, 400 demonstrators turned up and marched through the golf course, en route to the rugby pitch. Once the Springboks arrived it all started. The protesters managed to rip down a art of the fence that separated the golf course and the rugby ground. The demonstrators then proceeded to throw mud at the spectators while they retaliated with beer cans. Police were trying to hold back the protesters by forming a barrier between them and the fence, and did so successfully, meaning they game was played.
